Exploring Arles

after a great nights sleep in air conditioned rooms (yay), we set off Sunday to spend some time in Arles and then travel to the Pont du Guard.

Arles was an important provincial town in Roman times and still has extensive Roman remains

We started our tour at the arena built about 100 AD. Today it still is used for bullfighting contests. The arena sits about 20,000 people. When we arrived ,they were performing mock gladiatorial fights so we stopped to watch.

Then, we explored the ancient theater built around 10AD that sits 10,000 people. the acoustics were so good that I stood on the stage, talking in a quiet voice, and Mark, at the back of the theater could hear me.
