our second day in Paris

Today, we all did a lot of walking--over 20,000 steps according to the pedometer. We started the morning at the Musee d'Orsay, a museum dedicated to impressionistic and post impressionistic art. We saw lots of Manets, Monets, Van Goghs, Rodins, etc.

Then most had tea in the Tullerie Gardens near the Louvre. Some then went on to the Orangerie to see Monet's Waterlillies, while others returned to the Louvre and then headed to Notre Dame.

This evening featured a trip to the Eiffel Tower.

From Rocamadour to Amboise

On Thursday, we left Rocamadour and traveled about five hours to Amboise, a city in the Loire valley. once we checked into our hotel, we walked to Leonardo di Vincy's estate. Late in Di Vincy's life, we annoyed his patrons in Italy and needed to get out of dodge. Francis I invited him to France and gave him the estate. Di Vincy is buried in the royal chateau at Amboise. at his house they have built a number of full size models of his inventions. The students toured the house and then spent time in the estate gardens.

Sarlat and Castlenaud

Today, we were supposed to canoe on the Dordogne river, but the heavy rains and flooding changed plans. Instead , we traveled to visit the market in Sarlat and then visit Castlenaud, a late medieval fortification used primarily by the English in the Hundred Years War (1337-1453). It is both a great example of a castle and had a large number of medieval weapons for the students to see.
